Getting Your German Driver’s License
Upon arriving in Germany, you are allowed to drive with your foreign license for six months. After this period, you must convert your license to a German one to continue driving legally. Since the conversion process can take 6-8 weeks, it’s advisable to start early. Here’s a quick guide on what you need to do:
Driving License Conversion Process
Choosing Your Vehicle: You can choose between a manual transmission or an automatic transmission (automatic gearbox). We offer great cars for your lessons.
For EU Licenses: If your license is from another EU country, you can legally drive in Germany without any further steps. However, if you prefer, you can directly transfer your license without attending a driving school.
For Licenses from Countries Listed in Anlage 11 of FeV (Fahrerlaubnisverordnung):
- A translation of your license
- A copy of your original license
- A passport photo (35mm x 45mm)
- Your passport including the German „Aufenthaltstitel“ (residence permit), a copy is acceptable
- Proof of residence in Germany (Einwohnermeldebestätigung from the Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgerbüro) Note: You do not need an eye test or a first aid certificate.
For Licenses from Countries Not Listed in Anlage 11 of FeV (Fahrerlaubnisverordnung):
- A translation of your license
- A copy of your original license
